The Fantastic 4 Outdoor Digital Trends

Digital billboards may not be a brand new technology, but LED boards are enabling marketers some seriously exciting opportunities to deliver more carefully targeted and engaging messages through multisensory advertising, contextual advertising, mobile location advertising and personal preference profiles.

1:  Multi-sensory advertising

To create a lasting effect on the consumer’s memory of an ad, advertisers are creating messages that involve all five senses.  Holographic video, sound lighting and even smell are being integrated to create an experience the audience will find it hard to forget!

2:  Contextual advertising

Contextual advertising is in context with its environment.  Billboard ads can be contextual and thus highly increase their aim.  Imagine a billboard that changes an advertisement for accommodation depending on the destination of the flight you are walking towards.

3:  Personal preference profiles

Your favourite colour, your body shape and any other information that can be observed from your social media profiles can help to create a ‘super profile’ which can be targeted by marketers.  Digital outdoor billboards will be able to become highly personalised and specific, more so than ever before.

4:  Mobile location advertising

Using a technology called Near Field Communication (NFC – short-range wireless communication), marketers can advertise to people’s mobile phones as they walk past or into their store!

If you have an example of a great digital sign that you’ve seen, let us know!

Is Marketing Your Business, an Expense or an Investment?

Last week I visited my accountant and, as many businesses do, we looked at ways we can maximise our profit for next year; namely increasing our sales and cutting back on expenses.

One of my favourite soapbox topics is that since Marketing, Advertising and Promotion fall in the “Expenses” column on the ledger (along with pens, printer consumables and office coffee), many business owners see the marketing of their business as simply a cost – an expense – that they need to cut back on.

This riles me because, in my experience, strong branding and properly executed marketing activities actively drive new clients and more sales to a business, creating more income on the bottom line.

investment: [in-vest-muhnt] noun
the investing of money or capital in order to gain profitable returns, as interest, income, or appreciation in value. (definition from dictionary.com)

When we look at the definition of investment, it follows that focused marketing and branding activities are definitely investments not expenses!

There’s a whole separate argument about what constitutes “good” marketing (which encompasses branding, graphic design, advertising, strategy, online and social media, amongst others). For the time being, I just want you to consider your own thinking – is marketing just an expense, or a potential investment you’ve been ignoring? Have you been overlooking an opportunity for growth and improvement?

Over to you - What is your position on marketing in your business – do you find it a worthy investment? What marketing activities have had the most impact on increasing your sales?

Can not having a company logo negatively affect your business?

Following on from my previous post “Is it really that important to have a logo?”  Let’s explore if not having a logo can negatively affect your business.

Put simply: yes, it can

If you haven’t already, think of a business you’ve seen that doesn’t have a logo (or one that hasn’t been designed professionally).

Consider what you thought of that business at first glance – was your perception a positive or negative one?  Did you wonder about their professionalism, attention to detail, size and scope, commitment to quality?

If you felt a seed of doubt, then you can be sure that others felt it too.

The last thing you want is doubt from prospective customers. You need them to want what you’ve got, and want now – no question, no hesitation.  That moment of doubt could easily be the difference between a sales opportunity or not.

In business, people judge instantly

It’s true!  We all make instant judgements about whether we want to do business with others, based on our initial impression – the way things look, and how that makes us feel.

If you don’t believe me, think about the last time someone looked under-dressed for a business meeting you attended, or handed you a business card that was printed on their home computer.  What impressions did you form before you’d even really spoken to them?

That’s not to say you won’t change your opinion after finding out more about them.  My point is you made an initial judgement based on what you saw.  It’s simply human nature to do so.

For your business, you want your initial impression – that judgement – to be a positive one.  It’s this one reason above all else that is so important for you to put forward the best image you can.  Your image starts with the cornerstone of your identity – your logo.

Over to you

Now that we’ve looked at how not having a logo can negatively affect your business, let meknow some companies whose logos you admire… What was your first impression of the business based on their logo?

Is it really that important to have a company logo?

Recently, I spoke with a potential client starting up a niche business.  He’s set aside a small budget for branding and marketing, and it needs to stretch as far as possible.

He’d already got some other quotes and noticed in all of them the logo development made up a fair chunk of the cost.

“How important is having a logo, really?”  He asked me.  ”If I have to spend so much of my budget on it, I can’t do all of the marketing I want to – and I think that’s more important… I’ve got a niche market so they’re not going to care if I have a logo or not, they’re going to care about my product.”

Is your logo more important than the rest of your marketing?

No, it’s not more important, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important at all, far from it.  As I explained to the client, your logo is the cornerstone of your identity.

And of course your customer is going to care about your product.  However, people are essentially visual creatures, and we all know the saying “a picture speaks a thousand words.”  In a nutshell, your logo is the visual summary of everything you stand for, and that is a reflection on the quality of your product.

In a single, often subconscious, moment your logo communicates all sorts of messages (both positive and negative) about your professionalism, your position in the market, the quality of your products and services and your trustworthiness.

Investing in your logo is an investment in the perception of your business through the eyes of your customer.

Your logo sets the tone for the design and the voice that carries through the rest of your marketing.  Whether it’s serious, fun, technical, conversational, cutting-edge, conservative or made for little people; all this starts with, and spreads out from, your logo.

Over to you

Next I’ll be looking at whether not having a logo can negatively affect your business.  Until then, take the time to look at the logos of other businesses you see and work with…

Do they even have a logo, and do you think it’s been professionally designed?
Does the logo (or lack of it) positively or negatively affect your perception of the business?

Put real people in your signage!

Have you ever walked around your local shopping mall and taken in all of the signage and branding around you? You may not have noticed this because the affects are almost always subtle. But the large format digital prints or images that stand out the most almost always have real people in them.

So be on brand and keep the company’s style guide but make room for real people.  In other mediums such as Facebook and email marketing activity and open rates increase dramatically when images of real people are.

There is some tips to follow.
  • Don’t let you images be:
  • Deliberately – created rather than arising natural or spontaneous
  • Not unique (i.e. thousands of people have used the same image for their business)
  • “Americanised” – You know the ones!
  • Do not represent “real people”
  • Dated – Update them regularly
  • Hire a photographer so you get the images large enough to make life size  or bigger.
You can see some recent larger then life examples from Country Road & Target.

What Your Sign Should Say: Creating Your Message

One of the most obviously important parts of your custom outdoor sign is what is says. But the message you choose to put on your sign is vital for more reasons than you think. The words you put on your signage are more than just words; they're an important design element. The curvy shapes and lines of each letter create word forms which utilize valuable space within the design.

You don't want your sign to be ignored by passing cars or left unread by those who wander by. One of the biggest design mistakes we see is bad wording, and an ineffective sign could very well lose you business. Once you choose the right message to put on your new outdoor sign, you'll be on the right track!

Be obvious

Sure, it seems obvious. Your store is called Tina's, so that's what you're putting on your business sign. But wait. Anyone who has never been to Tina's before won't feel a spark of interest when they read your sign because they don't know what Tina's is. Is it a bakery? A jewelry store? A carpentry shop specializing in wooden gnomes? There's no way of knowing. Your sign needs to convey exactly what type of business you run because it may not be as obvious as you think. Tina's Fine Clothing is a more appropriate message for the sign. Perhaps Tina's will be in big block letters on top and Fine Clothing will be in smaller letters underneath. This way, your marketing is effective and the name of your shop has not been changed.

Be clear

Being too joke-y or subtle with the message on your outdoor business sign can make it confusing. Remember that wooden gnome carpentry shop? What if the sign read "Tina's Gnomes - You Gnow It!" Believe it or not, some people might find that funny and clever! But if your passing driver is not one of those people - or can't decipher the joke, you've probably just lost a customer. Clear and simple is the best way to go

3 ½ Seconds

No, this isn't the title of a new action movie. 3 ½ seconds is about how long a passing motorist looks at your outdoor sign. That doesn't give you much time. They key is to make your sign easily readable in that small window of time. Overcrowding your sign with too many lines of text will make it difficult to read. Using colors that blend together will make for a frustrated reader so make sure your text is in a color that contrasts with the background so reading your message is easy on the eyes.

Less is More

You now know that your custom outdoor signage shouldn't have too much text burying your message. But how much is too much? Try to use as few words as possible. The magic number is seven; so don't use more words than that. Remember, outdoor signs are meant to attract customers and spark an interest in them. You don't need to explain everything about your business up front - there's plenty of room for more signs once your target audience is interested enough to pull in and walk inside. Because of this, you want your message to be as pithy as possible. Don't say anything that isn't absolutely necessary. Tina's Bakery: Pastries and Baked Goods is not an efficient message. The name of the shop, Tina's Bakery, tells us that there will be pastries and baked goods inside, so the second line is unnecessary. For that matter, pastries are baked goods so the second line itself is redundant. A message such as Tina's Bakery: Always Organic is much more effective. Nothing is repeated and the most important feature of the business is stated.

You know the message on your outdoor business sign is important, and now you know just how much. Keep it simple, clear and obvious and your sign will bring in the target audience you're after.

Use a custom sign to advertise your business

Speedy Signs custom sign

Speedy Signs custom signs are available in a range of materials depending on their purpose. The purpose of custom signs includes announcements, providing directions, branding and announcing a special promotion. In essence, these types of signage work like a silent salesman promoting business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Also, as a powerful way to develop an instant rapport with passing traffic and generate business awareness, custom signage is indispensable. The different custom sign options offered by Speedy Signs definitely provides many choices for marketing a business and making sure it stands out to customers who walk in or pass by.

Signs should communicate to potential customers with pictures and easy-to-read text that are noticeable from long distances. Signs are invaluable, especially in the marketplace. Custom signs are used to show a warning, display a product, advertise, show direction or communicate a place of business. For an audience on the move, signs are stationary advertisements.

Businesses can capitalise on passing traffic by using custom signs to encourage people to come in and easily make a purchase, enquiry or gather information. An important step in creating a custom sign is developing a logo that reflects the business and what it stands for. Selling is vital for business so it must stand out from any competition.

Outdoor signage is is so much more than banners. Smaller sized outdoor  aluminum  signs  are generally useful for property  signs , direction signs, building  signs and sales signs, for example.  Outdoor signage  is often the first thing a potential customer will see.  Therefore, all signs outside must be able to withstand all kinds of weather and elements – from cold winters to long hot summers.  Marketing and advertising signs outside are good for businesses to show customers what their business is about and their brand.

For any small business operator, one of the most difficult tasks is finding an affordable, yet very effective way to get the word out about the business.  Using custom signs is one great solution as it helps to promote the business and present a positive image to the public.

Make Your Signage Better Than Ever

Signage is a word that means banners and signs advertising a business. Signage is known to be flexible and one of the most essential and basic forms of advertising for a lot of companies today. Indeed there are thousands of companies today that are already effectively using signage to help bring their business to the next level of success. Ask yourself this, if you were to make signage for your company, how would you make it different and how will it stand out from the rest? Below are some of the ideas that you might consider especially if this is your first time creating business signage.

First time designers tend to put everything in their ads, this is a no-no! If you think that your audience will be going to read all the details written on your sign then you need to think twice. Don't put all the unnecessary information to your signage, just keep it simple, easy to read and straight to the point.

Use your signage to highlight 1 or 2 important elements of your products or services. Good signage has a striking headline. You can also identify your product with photos and important features like the prices, discount or packages. If you have something that is 'free" that you can give away, that often gets you a customer who will pay for higher cost services.

Be creative and let your imagination run wild. Use striking and colorful elements in your signage. You can get some ideas from magazines, televisions, Internet or any form of media. Combine all these ideas and create fresh and new ones. You can also give your signage a personal touch if it's needed or if you think that this will add authenticity to your sign.

Great signage can help lead any business down the path to success; this sort of advertising technique is very effective. So if you're into success then consider refreshing or taking a new approach to your signage today.

A good sign company who wants your business will be willing to work with you to turn your concepts into great, lively graphics that will well represent your business services and products. Ideally, after seeing your business name in lights, or at least on a big banner or custom sign, people will start to recognize your brand. When people recognize a business name that it gives it some measure of authority which can your business.

Making Trade Shows Work For Your Brand

To some people, trade shows are a necessary evil, while others believe by ignoring them it will make them go away. The reality is that trade shows are not going away. Just the opposite is occurring right in front of our eyes: They are becoming more important.

Because there are fewer of them, they have a higher value. Face-to-face is always going to be the best way to build relationships and sell products or services, and so trade shows will always be a part of our business.

The question really is, Are you and your company "all in" on trade shows or half-baked? Do you go through the motions? Are you there just to show others that you are there, or are you there to promote, sell, and get business, but just have not seen the results? If the latter is you, then let's talk.

Start with your goal from the show. In order to make an investment, you need to have a goal for how much you want to sell. Obviously funds are limited, unless you are Microsoft, so based on what you are investing in flights, booth space, people, meals, etc., you then should have a goal on how much revenue you need to bring in to break even, and of course make money. Doing a show without a goal is the first mistake a lot of companies make.

Next are the preparations to succeed at the show. Who is in charge? Someone must be responsible for choosing who attends, where you stay, having a pre-meeting, and putting organization to the whole process. How does your booth look? What do you want to get across to the visitors? How will your presenters dress?

Obviously we are biased, for all signs and apparel should be supplied by Speedy Signs and EmbroidMe!

Do you "work" the show, or are you there babysitting it? No food in the booth. No chairs in the booth. You need to be there ready to work. You need to have nice collateral material, and answers to questions from prospects. Never badmouth competition, it will only come back to haunt you. Follow the laws within the franchising community. Don't be an "information dump" to all the visitors. People can take in only so much on a trade show floor. Positively and professionally represent your company.

After the show, follow-up is key, and having a clear next step for your visitors is also. Do you want them to go to your website? Read your brochure? Fill out an application? Visit a franchisee? Come in for a meeting? Attend a webinar? Whatever you deem your next step should be is what you are promoting at the show.

At a recent show, one of the exhibitors was complaining about the attendance. Now this was an owner of a franchise company, and he was very negative. It was in front of his employees, which was uncomfortable. I had just come from our booth meeting where our director of sales was saying this was one of the best shows we have been at in years! Same show, in fact same aisle of the show. Why such a totally different opinion of the show?

We all need to be very careful on how we spend our advertising money, and that also goes to choosing the right shows. For some of our brands, trade shows are not the best way to build, but somewhere along the road they all end up at a show.

Whether it's an industry show, franchise show, or local Chamber of Commerce show, shows have been and will continue to be, an important part of our diverse sales and marketing approach in 2011. Trade Shows are one of the best ways to target an area and meet people face to face.

Trade shows work, it's people that don't sometimes. Attitudes will have a lot to do with success.

Does your business need to draw customers? Effective signage is the answer!

"A good first impression."

The signage on your shop front is the most important statement you make about your business.

Let Speedy Signs design you a new look for 2011 and beyond.

The Speedy Signs signage development team are experienced specialists in creating signage programs to compliment the needs of any business. Speedy Signs has worked for years helping companies like yours develop functional, attractive, attention-getting signage for companies in New Zealand.

Your outdoor signage is often the first thing a potential customer sees. Your sign should be sufficiently bright and conspicuous to attract attention and focus on the core service you are offering to let prospective customers know what's sold there. To get some idea at what calls attention, why not go around and see what catches your own eyes. Make note of colors, shapes, graphic style, font style, and determine whether a sign is placed too up high or awkwardly too low on a building. Remember that the basis of a good custom sign is the first impression it leaves on a person.

Excellent reasons to choose Digital Signage for your business

For any company, advertising is one of the most important elements of their promotional programs. The entire brand image depends on how they sell themselves.

Therefore, by integrating unique advertising ideas through different advertising mediums, a company tries to attract as many eyes as possible. Gone are the days when an advertiser used to be content by placing posters of their products with the hope of catching the attention of its target audience.

No more of such passive advertising techniques are used. Today, advertising is much more competitive and aggressive. Evolving technology is changing every aspect of the paid form of advertisements.

With the new age tools and techniques, conventional advertising is taking great leaps in the form of digital advertising. Being a new medium, it is one of the fastest and most dynamic areas in the modern advertising industry and is capable of creating a superior quality of virtual world, generated through computer graphics and high-end animations.

Advertisers are going to every extent to carve a niche for their companies. Innovative ideas, creative tag lines and strategic placements of ads. The advertisers need to look at every aspect of the advertisement in order to survive in such a competitive ad world. Digital advertising comes here as a useful weapon to combat the tough competition. The latest version of the digital ads incorporates 3D animation, beaming sounds that help to cut through the clamor of a busy street and even fragrances and smells so as to catch the maximum attention of the passersby.

Digital hoardings, also known as digital signs or digital signage display messages and content. They aim to produce some of the most highly targeted messages to specific segments of audience and locations and at specific times. Therefore, digital advertising messages are more relevant and targeted to a specific segment and as such, can produce huge impact on the masses.

Digital advertising has the ability to deliver the ‘Point of Purchase’ by projecting dynamic, captivating and relevant advertising messages. Using digital advertising gives you the option to engage the consumers at a certain point of time and their attention is thus, virtually guaranteed.

One simply cannot ignore such catchy advertising messages while passing by a place. That is why these advertisements are placed on areas where the public attention is 100 percent guaranteed, like a bus stand, outside a bank, shopping malls and restaurants. These targeted places have better chances to get the maximum crowd and thus, the digital signage displays have more probability to get the maximum exposure.

A company should opt for digital signage in order to get maximum promotion, as it is advantageous in many ways. It helps a company to communicate about its brand. It is crucial for brand building and is quite ‘in-your-face’ or interactive in terms of spreading the intended message. Unlike the conventional form of advertising like the printed posters or signs, digital signage can offer great potential by providing superior returns when it comes to investment opportunities. Right from the outdoors and the conference rooms to retail, a digital sign could be a great way to engage and educate consumers with its innovative and unique display ideas.

Thus, you can build a great reputation in the market by harnessing the vast potential of digital signage. Digital advertising undoubtedly brings never-ending opportunities to your companies. While the traditional system of advertising is becoming a passé for several newly emerging companies, digital signage is acquiring the supreme position through the utilization of a wide variety of cutting-edge technologies and by the incorporation of attention-grabbing tricks, to convey your creative concept to the common masses.

Top 5 Tips for a Great Business Sign

If your business is in a high traffic area then you want to make sure you stand out from nearby shops.

Business signs are a great way to attract interest and also build brand awareness. Unfortunately, not all sign services are created equally, so you need to make sure you spend your money wisely.

Top 5 Tips for a Great Business Sign

1. Remember your sign is a form of Communication to your business audience
It sounds simple, yet many business owners forget this. Your sign should reflect your attributes and competitive advantage. This is another reason to have it professionally designed by a sign writer. First and foremost, you should understand your target audience and carve into a specific niche.

2. Have good Lighting
This goes without saying, but have you ever noticed the amount of signs that are darkly lit and unreadable? Probably not, because you don’t see them, but they're out there. Make sure your not missing out on potential business by appropriately lighting your sign. Great vibrant colors do not hurt either, as long as they are aesthetically pleasing and not too obnoxious.

3. Make it short and simple
Do not overload your sign with too much information. Poorly designed logos will also detract from your sign. Signs shops are notoriously bad for creating logos (not all of them – but most). Instead, why not get your logo professionally designed by an expert? They are very cost effecient, but most importantly, provide an excellent return on investment. Your logo makes the first impression and retains your brand identity.

4. Be sure it’s big enough to be read from a distance
Be sure to check with your city office on sign regulations and ordinances. However, make sure your sign is legible from nearby vantage points and high traffic areas. Get as much exposure as you can.

5. Change it occasionally
You wouldn’t necessarily need to change the whole sign. Logo’s, color schemes, shapes should all remain consistent. However, it helps to add additional information about your business whenever possible. New sale going on? New event taking place? Adjusting this information may help your ability to get noticed by passer-bys.

The Different Types Of Business Signage To Market Your Business

A business sign is the first impression that many people have of your business. You want it to demonstrate quality, but be suitable for the business itself. While flashing LED or neon lights might be just the suitable touch to advertise a casino, nightclub or even a movie rental business, it may not be the most suitable for a funeral home. That’s why consulting with a specialist in the area of signage or engraving can assist you increase the effectiveness of your signage dollar.

The quality and appropriateness of the business signage extends to the indoor and the outdoor signs. Signs exhibiting the business name, signs giving information, door plaques, signs mandated by law, name plates and directional signs tell visitors something more than just the details you wish to convey, they tell a lot about the business. You want all business signage to be of high quality to demonstrate your extra attention to detail and give your customers or visitors the feeling of being in capable hands.

Every business utilizes a number of different types of signs. The most important, however, is often the sign with the company name or brand. Depending on the business, the type of material used for this sign varies. You might find that neon can add excitment or elegance to your business. The true professional knows how to work with neon signage to create all types of looks and combine them with other materials for signage to present the image you want for your business. Combinations of polished steel letter signs and neon can add elegance and make a distinctive difference in how visitors view the business. The use of frosted or clear Perspex plaques or a demure metallic sign can also deliver life to the outside of the building and express an eye for quality and detail.

In addition to the business name and brand, there are numerous informational signs for the outside that can aid your clients in utilizing your services or business. Signs that let the customer understand your special prices, signs with details for health and safety rules and even directional and parking signs add to the way your potential clients view your business.

Inside signs that give information also require a specialist in business signage. Since there are a number of different designs and materials, picking one that complements the interior design of your building is vital. You can select from the simple engraved plastic sign telling directions, identifying important places, hrs, rules and warnings. The interior signs with the company name and brand are particularly important by the front desk. If you have an office inside a complex, using business signage to show the company name and brand prominently has the same impact guests experience with outside business signage.

If you do business outside of the office, like carpentry work, bug control or repair services, business signage on your car can add a dynamic to your advertising. Everywhere you go, you’ll inform the people you pass about your goods or services. Business signage on vehicles creates a new dimension for bringing in new customers.

Required safety signs don’t need to be boring. You can make these attractive and yet functional. Choosing the right safety signs for your needs can help not only create an attractive area, but also attract eyes to the sign. No matter how many signs you have, if people don’t notice them, your warnings and rules go unnoticed too.

Identifying your staff should be as gracious as a personal introduction. Business signage of high quality as nameplates introduces your visitors and new workers to the people of importance in your company. Regardless of the material you use, a quality nameplate shows those named that you believe they’re important enough for the best sign on the market.

Outdoor Signage Can Get You Noticed in Your Local Market

It's hard to get your business noticed these days, especially if you're trying to get a new product or service off the ground. With the competition among various small businesses in your local market, it is important that you take time to plan and design the right signage to attract potential clients.

There is a big difference between outdoor signage and indoor signage. Outdoor signs need to get noticed. For example, billboards and banners for outdoor signage are generally designed to be bigger with louder graphics than the usual signs. Billboards are a bit more expansive and maybe a bit impractical for small business advertising. On the other hand, banners are the most cost effective type of outdoor advertising. Banners are seen, read and acted upon over and over again each day. Whether you want to create product awareness, introduce special pricing, promote an event or draw visitors to your trade show booth, colorful indoor banners are a sure way to make an impact and generate excitement.

Vinyl Banners can be used very effectively as outdoor signage. You can quickly draw attention and awareness to your business, new products or services with high-impact outdoor signs like this. They are practical because they are versatile, durable, affordable, and are very likely to get seen even from a distance. Another advantage of banners is that you can move them around easily. You can hang them in front of your place of business or find a location that has more traffic to help people know where you are. You can also store banners for future use so you can rotate different offers depending on your specific objectives.

Use graphics that are simple yet memorable. You don't want the banner to have too many graphics. And don't make it look too serious because it can turn off potential clients. The goal is to drive traffic into your place of business without trying to get too much information conveyed all at once.

Outdoor signage is not just about banners. You can put magnetic signs on your vehicles, yard signs around your town and use digital signage where it makes sense. The thing to remember is that people want to do business with you but you have to let them know who you are and where they should go to do business with you.

Speedy Signs is a full service sign shop where you can design your own Outdoor Signage online.
