Cloud Computing for Small Businesses: Tips & Tricks

Cloud computing is a whole new computing technology and philosophy that has changed the way small businesses are conducted online. What was once seen as a dream has been integrated into mainstream IT resource. A research conducted by Portio Research in 2010 found that 56% small business segments are still unfamiliar with concept. If you are one of them, here are some tips as to why you should consider cloud computing for your small business.

1. Better Business Productivity
With cloud computing at your disposal, you can run your business ‘on the go.’ Your business employees can access emails and documents from anywhere on the planet. It gives you and your staff flexibility to set up working station anywhere. Moreover, you can employ people globally without letting it affect business productivity. In fact, with several great minds working on a small business project from the remotest corner of the world, you get to enhance small business operation.

2. Improved Security
As compared to traditional IT resources, cloud computing is more secure for data storage and management. Cloud service providers employ leading security experts and invest considerable amount of money to develop security technology to protect small business establishments. When you use cloud computing, you reduce dependence on storing confidential data on laptops or USB devices because every piece of information is saved on the private cloud and/or public cloud, or in a hybrid cloud.

3. Better Cultural Adjustment and Collaboration
Cloud computing is user-centered technology which has made business and professional working environment easily accessible. These days’ small businesses hire employees from different countries and seeing the current pattern of working, a large section of employees recruited by small businesses work from home. The only connecting tool between employer and employee are cloud applications like Google Apps or Skype. Even with the geographical barrier, there is a more collaborative way of working which has undoubtedly improved knowledge sharing, creativity and communication channels.

4. 24 Hours Business Information Availability
In contrast to traditional IT models, cloud computing improves business resiliency by making information available 24-7. The cloud service providers offer 24 hours support and 99.9% uptime guarantee. Rate of redundancy is reduced and data centers ensure that your business information is available all the time. In other words, there is less downtime and even if some problem arise; it is sorted out in a matter of minutes. According to estimates by IDC, small businesses with cloud computing enjoy 97% greater reliability. Moreover, if you are dissatisfied with cloud service providers, you have the flexibility to change service providers any time you want.

5. Increased Cost Savings
In earlier days, starting a business on a small scale involved setting aside at least $5000 plus for IT infrastructure. Return to 2011, and your cost savings will be higher than you can anticipate. It helps business to save on IT software and hardware expenditure by almost 54%; the saved amount can be put to use for other business infrastructure development.

Cloud computing is an essential aspect of small business establishment in terms of cost and efficiency. Almost every business today runs on the cloud model because it has made information sharing possible on a wider level.

Top 7 iPhone Photography Apps

While the iPhone and its LED flash camera has proven that it can be a decent alternative to standalone digital cameras, it can even trump the bulky, obtrusive photography equipment due to the availability of iPhone Photography Apps. Of course, iPhone apps are a dime a dozen, and it is very easy to get lost amongst the choices that are out there. Here are a few of the ones that definitely stand out:

1.  Noir – is a neat little app that lets you convert your photos into classic-looking monochrome images that use subtle lighting effects to emphasize certain elements of the picture, all in a few screen taps.

2.  PhotoForge 2 – a decent image editing software for your iPhone that is as robust as the photo editing suites found on desktop PCs. PF 2 includes GPS functionality and integration with online sharing tools such as Tumblr and Flickr.

3.  AutoStitch – a fairly straightforward app that lets you stitch together several photos from the iPhone camera in order to create a panorama photo. It doesn’t do much more but what it does, it does well enough.

4.  Snapseed – another excellent photo editing app that can go toe to toe with photo editing tools found in desktop PCs. All the bells and whistles are in here, including various special effects such as “Organic Frames” and “Vintage Film”.

5.  Instagram – if you’re really into simple “shoot and share” photo apps, Instagram is perfect. It lets you shoot pictures, apply filters, and share the output to your friends in just a couple of mouse clicks.

6. Hipstamatic – this app turns your iPhone into a little kid’s toy camera, complete with a slide switch and warm-up flash. But it’s not just eye candy, Hipstamatic comes with several virtual films, lenses, and flashes that affect the output.

7. Polarize – as its name implies, Polarize lets you manipulate the behaviour of light waves in your images. This is very useful for things like removing reflections on glass or making the sky look bluer.

The apps in this list are just some of the best I found, but the list is by no means comprehensive. If you have a favorite iPhone photography app that isn’t included, feel free to share it in the comments.

What Is A QR Code Sign And Why Do You Need One?

We all know that one of the keys to great SEO is making sure you keep your website updated, new and fresh. Whether you do this with a blog, or you change your homepage with new offers, coupons or new products, it serves to show Google that your site is “alive.” For many small businesses in particular, this is a real challenge.

So you already have great, fresh content on your site—what’s next? Do you know what is coming that may benefit your small business?

Have you heard of QR codes yet? Here is a quick introduction:

What Are QR codes? They look like this:

They come to us from Japan where they are very common. QR is short for Quick Response (they can be read quickly by a cell phone). They are used to take a piece of information from a transitory media and put it in to your cell phone. You may soon see QR Codes in a magazine advert, on a billboard, a web page or even on someone’s t-shirt. Once it is in your cell phone, it may give you details about that business (allowing users to search for nearby locations), or details about the person wearing the t-shirt, show you a URL which you can click to see a trailer for a movie, or it may give you a coupon which you can use in a local outlet.

The reason why they are more useful than a standard barcode is that they can store (and digitally present) much more data, including url links, geo coordinates, and text. The other key feature of QR Codes is that instead of requiring a chunky hand-held scanner to scan them, many modern cell phones can scan them. The full Wikipedia description is here.

How does the cell phone read the code?

The cell phone needs a QR code reader, like this one from Kaywa. It takes literally 1 minute for someone with an iPhone or Android phone to find and install the reader.

How do you generate a code?

You can easily generate a QR code using a site like Kaywa.com or you can use the Open Source code to generate codes for you if you have a smart developer on hand. Google also has a tool — see our separate article about that: Close-Up With Google’s New QR Code Generator.

How can you use QR codes to benefit search marketing?

We are only just scratching the surface of how they will be used. We have added one to every business listing in our directory. Here are a few examples of how others are using them.

You can also watch this BBC. Click interview on YouTube.

How will Google see them?

If you add them to your website, the search engines will see that your pages have changed, and that you are updating pages. The search engine will see a new image and index it accordingly. At some point soon, the search engines will likely recognize QR codes and possibly index the content in them.

Will your customers use them?

Today, few may use them, but those that do will certainly appreciate your tech knowledge, and those that don’t will certainly be inquisitive, which may open the door for conversation and a potential sale. Those that do use QR codes will definitely have a high tech know-how and may be more receptive to your presence on the web, your Twitter presence, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube etc.

How could you use a QR code?

Your business, no matter how small or large, could use QR codes in a number of ways. You might auto generate one next to every product on your web site containing all the product details, the number to call and the URL link to the page so they can show their friends on their cell phone. You could add one to your business card containing your contact details so its easy for someone to add you to their contacts on their cell phone.

Add them to any print advertising, flyers, posters, invites, TV ads etc containing:
  • Product details
  • Contact details
  • Offer details
  • Event details
  • Competition details
  • A coupon
  • Twitter, Facebook, MySpace IDs
  • A link to your YouTube video

Are vehicle wraps worth the investment?

How many times during the 3-5 year lease term of the vehicle will your graphics be viewed? How many clients and potential clients will be generated by your vehicle graphics?

Vehicle wrap graphics are custom made and custom designed – specifically to help you target the correct market very effectively with your budget in mind. Wrap graphics cover your whole vehicle or a large area of the vehicle to add impact to your presentation by controlling the background of your sign and integrating all the graphic elements.

With vehicle wraps, it is more important to consider value, design, quality, and expertise than with most other signage mediums.

With regard to value, the quoted dollar value is one of the smallest considerations that you should have when choosing the company to complete your work – value for money is the key consideration. The quotation below sums this up.

Speedy Signs is an expert in the field of vehicle graphics application. The job you get done will be great value for money. It is an investment that will pay you back many times over.

Design

A great and eye-catching design is important to reflect your company in a positive light in the market place. The expert designers at Speedy Signs regularly design graphics for vehicles. This is important.

The design work required for a vehicle graphic is far different from the design work required for a flat surface, such as a business card, brochure, or flat building panel. There are many more considerations:
  • The designer is designing for a curved surface and needs to allow for the various curves and lines on the vehicle.
  • All vehicles are different.
  • Allowance needs to be made for windows. Do you need to see through those windows? If so, and you want the design to go over them, then a different film is required.
  • Door handles, plastic strips down the side, latches. These are all elements the designer must take into account. You don’t want your phone number running through a plastic strip so that it can’t be read.
  • Visibility on the road. Vehicle graphics are creating a mobile billboard for your business. Consideration needs to be given to the size and readability of key text that is moving. It is no good having your phone number on your vehicle if no one can read it or take it down.
Quality

Speedy Signs will only use proven premium vehicle graphic specific films for your vehicle graphics. This is a very important point. Two similar vehicle graphics can look the same when they are first completed. If one is done using cheaper films, and the other is completed using premium vehicle graphic specific films, then it is quite likely they will look the same when they leave the showroom. However, this will rapidly change as time passes and they are exposed to the elements.

This can be deceiving for consumers, especially when comparing the dollar value of a quote.

The most telling time to judge a vehicle graphic for value for money is 6-12 months after the vehicle graphics have been applied. Be aware of, and look out for peeling, shrinking, bridging, colour fade, and cracking of the vinyl if you have chosen the cheapest quote using inferior materials.

Economy in choosing a vehicle wrap supplier can be false economy. This is a technical field where correct equipment, materials, processes, and design are critical. If any of these elements are not in place, the effectiveness and life expectancy of your graphic is at risk.

Expertise

Speedy Signs spend a great deal of time, effort, and money in training its staff to advanced levels in vehicle graphic application.

Besides its in-house training and quality assurance programmes, Speedy Signs regularly attends and passes high level 3M and Avery accreditation courses.

Speedy Signs specialist vehicle graphics applicators know how to apply your graphics correctly, so that they look good when you pick the vehicle up, and still look as good many years later.

If there happen to be any warranty issues, Speedy Signs will be there to look after you in the years to come.. Can the same be said for the low-cost operator who gave you a cheap quote?

SUBWAY® Pro Cycling’s Hubbard dedicates Benchmark win to grandfather

11 September 2011

Speedy Signs are proud to Support SUBWAY® Pro Cycling

SUBWAY® Pro Cycling’s Tom Hubbard made it two from two with a win in the second round of the Benchmark Homes Tour in Timaru today, and dedicated the result to his grandfather who recently passed away.

SUBWAY® Pro Cycling’s Sam Horgan won the opening race in Nelson and the SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team was focused on keeping the tour series leader’s jersey and its lead in the team’s classification.

Racing was on a tough circuit riders completed three times after a shorter opening circuit with the number of climbs gradually taking its toll on the field.

After several failed breakaway attempts the winning move was made as the final lap of the 120 kilometre race got underway. It contained SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team mates Paul Odlin and Hubbard, James Early from the Benchmark Homes Cycling Team and L & M Group Racing’s Brendon Sharratt.

The group worked hard at holding off the chasing bunch that had been whittled down to 30 riders until Hubbard attacked on the final climb to win in two hours, 41 minutes and 44 seconds. Early beat Sharratt to the line to take second, nine seconds after Hubbard.

“The team did a super job at the front all day today, and I honoured my race plan” Hubbard said.

“It was helpful to have two Subway (Pro Cycling Team) riders in the winning move, and I was worried the bunch was catching us at the end but it was a great result for me and the team today. My grandfather was a huge supporter of my racing and he passed away a couple of weeks ago; today’s win was also for him.”

Hubbard also claimed the lead in the Benchmark Tour Under 23 riders classification. Horgan came in fifth with the rest of the SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team all comfortably in the leading bunch, job done.

“It was a great result all round,” SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team General Manager Hayden Godfrey said.

“We stuck to the plan and kept the leaders jersey in the team and also increased our lead in the teams competition.”

Round three of the Benchmark Homes Series is on October 8th.

Notes:
  • The Subway Pro Cycling Team was New Zealand’s first professional cycling team, established six years ago.
  • It has been registered as a UCI Continental team since early 2009 with a successful track record of racing in New Zealand, Asia and the United States.

Great Tips to make the most of Rugbymania!

We had to share this article from our good friends at stuff.co.nz

Resistance is pointless. For the next two months, arguably the biggest sporting event held in New Zealand will be inescapable. So to avoid a mauling you may as well embrace it.

For die-hard fans, visitors to New Zealand and even those who've already had enough of the hype, we have put together a Stuff top 10 survival guide.

Leave your tips for surviving below.

1. Embrace the tourist - go on, give them a friendly hug.

With around 95,000 visitors expected, there's going to be a lot of people in fancy dress, singing rugby chants and generally spreading good cheer. The influx of tourists is arguably what brings the tournament alive. So if you see any camera-wielding, lost-looking tourists help them out.

2. Adopt a minnow like Namibia or Russia (it's their first World Cup).

Apart from anything else, the tickets to these matches are guaranteed to be cheaper and you'll probably meet some interesting fans. Why not go the whole hog and buy your new team's kit.

3. If you can't make any of the games, try out the fan zones and pubs around the country - there really is something exciting about watching the games with others.

4. Show support for Canterbury. The February quake took away the garden's city seven RWC matches - five pool matches and two quarter-finals - but the Government has put $650,000 towards a special fan zone at Hagley Park along with a festival of events in Christchurch. While you're there why not inject a few dollars into the local economy by eating out and enjoying a beer before donating to the RWC Christchurch Appeal.

5. Arrange a World Cup sweepstake among your friends and family. Even if you don't have any interest in rugby, a sweepstake will provide a frisson of excitement about the results. How about a morning tea where everyone is given a team and has to bring the national dish?

6. Take part in the World Cup festivities... when it suits you. There are hundreds of events going on around New Zealand - you don't have to be a footy fan to enjoy these. Checkout the REAL New Zealand Festival for details.

7. For those of us who are just sick of the screening, repeating and endless analysing clogging up TV channels, Channel Four is promoting itself as the 'Home Of Not Rugby'. Creative director Tony Bradbourne says the campaign isn't really about being anti-rugby, per se, it's more about being pro other forms of entertainment and it appears the risk has paid off with 90,000 people joining their Facebook Page.

8. Attend a public training - it's free!

9. Be nice to the volunteers. They're vital to the whole event. If you see one, clap them on the back, tell them what a key job they're doing, compliment them on their uniform, or bake them something nice! It'll make their day, and yours.

10. Denial. Pretending you've never heard of the cup will drive rugby fans mad... "is that football?" and "who's playing?"

TIP: One for the non-rugby lovely women stuck with a rugby-mad partner when it's not going their way: don't tell them to: "Get over it, it's only a game." Somehow that'll only fuel his frustration.

Checkout your closest FANZONE around the country!

10 Every Day Basics For Retailers

As a VM consultant I get to see all sorts of good and a lot of bad in all sorts of retail situations. I love helping the retailer to maximise visual cut through and to develop brand awareness. However I often see the same mistakes repeated over and over and over again.

Therefore I have compiled my list of the top 10 things to focus on every day.

This is the advice I most commonly give to struggling retailers. I pass this on to you,so that you don’t end up needing a visit from us about the easy stuff. Frankly this is retail one-O-one and it infuriates me to see so many getting it wrong.

1. Put it back or Fill the holes. (You can’t sell it if it’s not on the shelf.)

2. Don’t split your categories. How do you expect your customer to find something when the category is spread all over the shop? (The only exception is if you are cross-merchandising for a pre-determined purpose.)

3. Put your product drivers at eye-level. This is your best real estate, use it wisely.

4. Use signage to communicate effectively or not at all.
Get rid of those irritating signs that say ‘the camera is watching’ or “You break, it you buy it”. Try to actually encourage the customer to handle the products.

5. Open up the sight-lines. If your customer can’t see where she wants to go, chances are she won’t bother.

6. Get your adjacencies right. (And I mean from your customer’s point of view, not because it suits you.)

7. If you have directional lighting make sure it is pointed at something, not just a useless pool of light on the floor.

8. Displays are not about being pretty, they are there to drive sales. Therefore only display what you have in stock and what you want to sell.

9. Window displays are your first opportunity to communicate with your customers souse them with some thought. They should say something about what your business is about and have a hook.

10. Clean your bl**dy shop!

11. My Bonus tip: Don’t always position your discounted leftovers at the front of the store. Think about it. Sometimes there is a reason why it never sold in the first place.

Vehicle Graphics and Window Graphics FAQ

Can you provide full colour photographs and text for my vehicle graphics? What options are available? From simple single colour lettering on the side of your vehicle to large format photographs and vehicle wraps, Speedy Signs can provide a one stop shop solution for all of your vehicle graphic needs. Our vehicle graphics are applied in our dedicated vehicle application bay wherever possible, providing the optimum conditions for vehicle graphics application. We also provide a range of magnetic vehicle signs and use reflective or conspicuity markings for high visibility vehicles.

How do I remove my vehicle graphics? For a small fee, Speedy Signs can remove the graphics for you. Alternatively you should be able to remove your own vehicle graphics without damaging your paintwork by using a hair dryer to warm and loosen the vinyl. Depending how long the graphics have been on the vehicle, you may see a small glue residue on the paintwork which can be easily removed. In the case of full vehicle wraps, it is advisable to get a professional to remove the graphics. For further advice please contact your nearest centre.

How long do vehicle graphics last? Professionally applied vehicle graphics should last for years if they are cared for correctly. We advise that you do not wash your vehicle for a week after vehicle graphics are applied and do not jet wash the graphics as this may reduce their life. For permanent vehicle graphics, we always offer to laminate the graphics which should prolong the colour of any digitally printed images. We use varying grades of vinyl to fit within your requirements.

What are decals? Decals are another term used for vinyl graphics and vinyl signs. Decals are commonly used as a term to describe text and logos on motorbikes, cars, trailers, trucks, vans and trucks amongst other transportation modes.

What are reflective vinyl graphics / conspicuity markings? There are specialist vinyl materials available which offer reflective qualities for high impact graphics throughout the night. We can apply your vehicle with rear chevrons or build reflective graphics into your livery design for high visibility of your vehicle.

What is etch vinyl graphics and how is it used on windows? Also called frosted vinyl, etch window graphics are ideal for branding areas of glass giving a professional finish to your premises. Large areas of glass also need to be identified with markings to conform to health and safety standards and etch vinyl is a great way to achieve this.

What's the difference between vehicle graphics, vehicle livery and vehicle wrapping?
Vehicle graphics and vehicle livery are the general terms used to describe the application of vinyl graphics to any type of vehicle from cars and vans right through to lorries or motorcycles. We have also applied graphics to buses, boats and even an aeroplane in the past. The graphics can be as simple as text lettering or can include photographs, company logos, tonal fades and even reflective or conspicuity markings. Visit the vehicle graphics page to find out more and see examples.
